CHOI Hyesook | b.1984, Korea

CHOI Hyesook explores the structures of contemporary consumer culture and desire through glass-based sculpture, examining the symbolic and temporal dimensions of objects. By recreating everyday commodities—such as luxury handbags, sneakers, and cosmetics—in glass, she presents them as future relics.

Her 21st Century Relics series transforms ordinary consumer goods into archaeological objects, evoking both the mechanisms of desire and the passage of time beyond their disappearance. In her Beauty Portrait of the 21st Century series, she references classical works by Shin Yunbok, questioning how identity and desire are constructed through consumer culture today. Utilizing the pâte de verre technique, her semi-translucent and textured surfaces expand the sensory qualities of glass.

Her work is recognized for its contemporary sculptural language, where aesthetic beauty and critical inquiry coexist. From 2022 to 2024, she was supported by major institutions including Shinsegae Duty Free(DF) and the Korea Arts Management Service. Her works are held in collections such as the Total Museum of Contemporary Art, the Ruskin Glass Collection (UK), and the Cheongju Craft Biennale collection. She is regarded as a leading artist exploring the intersection of contemporary consumer culture and craft.
